For the editor,
Roe v. Wade asserted that women’s right to an abortion was based on the 14th Amendment guarantee of freedom, which the court interpreted as a right to privacy, free from unreasonable government interference. Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. says abortion is not rooted in the country’s history and tradition.
Let’s face it, abortions have always happened since humans inhabited the earth. They happened in the 1700s and will continue to happen in the future. The only real question is: are abortions going to be legal, safe and regulated or are we going to entrust them to covert and dangerous black market operations.
Honestly, nobody likes abortions. They are messy, bloody, smelly and ugly. There is nothing to like about abortions. But abortions happen because there’s no guarantee that placental abruption won’t happen; or that the ectopic pregnancy will not occur; or that the fetus will not develop without the vital organs needing to survive outside the uterus; or a thousand other problems.
Abortions happen because it is part of the human condition. Do women really need to justify their pregnancy to the government? Judge Alito says yes. What other privacy and individual liberty rights is Judge Alito willing to take and award to his big brother? Justice Alito’s opinion is an attack on the liberty of all free people and all Americans.
